What Goes on Tour

The World according to Sibs or.......... Recent History of Luton Rugby Football Club Tours

Canada 2005

Since my first involvement with Luton Rugby Club some 30 or so years ago, I have been privileged to be a participant in several senior tours over the years. In providing this piece for the website I hope I have given you an insight into 'what goes on tour' without breaking the golden rule!

Sweet Sixteen
My first Official type tour was at the tender at of 16, having just played a colts game on the Saturday against local rivals Stockwood Park who at that time were the premier club in Luton, and got a creditable draw, we travelled down to the West Country to join up with the senior players who left the day before. We arrived in the late evening and eventually ended up sleeping on the floor in some of the pre booked rooms in a small hotel. As unofficial guests we joined in the senior fun including drinking, and even managed to play in the tour match, which I think we won.
c.2000 The Craic
Official tours from then on were few and far between mainly due to the amount of work involved in the organisational side of things and arranging suitable dates and destinations to visit. My next memory was of a weekend tour to Ireland, which I believe was an official club tour, which was circa 2000. Unfortunately I did not travel on this tour, but having met the players and supporters upon their return I am convinced that everyone had a cracking time, hangovers and all.
2003 Cornish Capers - Busses, Batman, Booze & ......
Moving on swiftly, Newquay 2003. This was my first involvement in organising a senior rugby tour and actually started as most do over a few pints after a match. Enquiries were made and the services of a tour company engaged, the overall cost per tourist being around £150. After a hearty breakfast the intrepid tourists boarded the some what elderly coach........
2005 Canadian Club and other High Altitude actvities.....
The next more recent official club tour was a major step in to the unknown, an International tour to Canada, in 2005. From an early stage it was decided to organise the tour separate from any company, and use our contacts in Calgary to organise the Canadian side on out behalf. The overall cost per tourist worked out at £750, with each person receiving a tour kit bag valued at around £200 each. All of the tour party took part in fund raising events during the year leading up to the tour the most notable being the Ladies Evenings..........................................................................................
Youth & Mini Tours
For a number of years the mini rugby section of Luton Rugby Club have been attending the Havant Festival, which takes place over a weekend and is open to both players and their parents to attend. In the past our teams of all age groups have been very successful and long may it last. This festival gives the players and parents a chance to meet new friends and gauge how they are progressing as a team against other top clubs.............................................
2009 Mumbles Tour Report
Following a 4 year absence since our last tour to Canada in 2005 an intrepid band of club members took it upon themselves to arrange a purely social tour to the wilds of South Wales namely the town of Mumbles, the home of our club steward, Chris. The party consisted of 19 members, a mixture of seasoned tour veterans and 9 apprehensive, Senior Tour Virgins who were ready for their initiation in to the very prestigious club (Senior Tour Veterans)................................................................
