Luton’s six game unbeaten run was ended by Oadby Wyggestonians on Saturday as they were beaten 26-19.

Tries from Ben Murphy, Chris Davies and David Hamm weren’t enough to keep their 100% win record in tact.

The result means Luton are now third in the Midlands 2 East (South) table, three points behind now leaders Oadby.

The visitors took the lead as their inside centre received the ball around the 22-metre-line and five Luton players couldn’t stop him touching the ball down over the line. Oadby’s scrum half converted easily.

Luton hit back quickly as the visitors couldn’t stop some strong phases of play after a line-out five metre from the try line and eventually hooker Murphy was forced over the line. Hamm converted well to pull the game level at 7-7.

Oadby’s scrum half had the only other opportunity to points on the board in the first half and could have sent his team into the interval with the lead, but he missed his penalty to make it 7-10.

Luton went behind 14-7 early in the second half as Oadby’s prop received the ball from the back of the ruck within close range of the try line and two Luton players couldn’t stop him getting the ball down over the line. The visitors scrum half converted again.

However, Luton fought back as Davies scored a brilliant try as he received the ball on the right wing about 22 metres out, before going on a fantastic run wiggling around a number of Oadby backs and touching down to make 12-14, Hamm added the extras from the conversion to draw the game level.

It was then fly half Hamm who put Luton in the lead as scrum half Dave Evans passed to him from the back of the ruck and Hamm made a diagonal run from close range and dived over in the corner to make it 19-14, but he failed to convert his own try.

Luton were then reduced to 14-men and Oadby took advantage as their forwards crashed over the line to make it 19-19. The visitors scrum half converted well from the 22 to put them two points in the lead.

Wyggestonians then secured the win as their number eight broke away from a maul five metres out and had a clear run to try area. The scrum half missed the conversion and the game ended 26-19.

Luton will be hoping to re-find their form next weekend away to ninth placed Oakham.
