Luton RFC got back to winning ways on Saturday by beating Oakham away from home 20-41.

A brace of tries from Aiden Kenny and Dave Evans and scores from Josh McFarlane, Ryan Sheppard, Stephen Cobb and meant that Luton kept the pressure on Midlands 2 East (South) table toppers Oadby.

Scrum half Evans scored in the first minute as he picked the ball up at the back of a scrum just beyond Oakham’s 22-metre line and went on a fantastic run before putting the ball down in the try area.

David Hamm converted well from an angle juts past the 22 to make it 0-7 early on.

At the other end Oakham’s scrum half slotted home an easy penalty right in front of the posts to make it 3-7.

Winger Kenny then extended Luton’s lead as Matt Yang collected the ball at the back of a scrum played it out to Evans who found Kenny on the wing around 25 metres out, he handed off the full back and put the ball down the corner. Hamm missed the conversion.

Evans scored again as he caught everyone off-guard with a quick penalty 30 metres from the try line and went on a great run fending off a couple of players and diving over the line in the corner to make it 3-17. Hamm failed to convert once more.

Sheppard was next to scored as the visitors pushed a maul about 15 metres to the try line, Sheppard split from the crowd and dived over to make it 3-22. Hamm couldn’t add on the extras again.

Luton went into the break 29-3 ahead as Tom Winch was found on the wing by Evans, he side-stepped Oakham’s winger finding himself 2-on-1 with the full back, Winch opted for the easy pass inside to McFarlane and he put the ball down between the posts. Hamm converted easily.

Kenny scored his second try early in the second half as Luton turned over an Oakham scrum before Evans went on another good run laying it off to Ryan Staff who played it out Yang, who handed off a home sides player before passing it inside to Kenny who had avoided two tackles before diving over. The conversion was missed again.

Luton were doing well to stop Oakham from getting over as they attacked within close range for a number of phases, but eventually the home sides tighthead prop squeezed over. Oakham’s kicker converted well from an angle just beyond the 22 to make it 10-34.

Oakham closed the gap again as their scrum half picked the ball up at the back of a ruck five metres out before fooling Evans with a dummy pass and Alex Hill couldn’t stop him diving over in the corner. The try scoring missed the kick.

Cobb ended any hopes of an Oakham come back as Yang received the ball at the back of a scrum on the 22, the number eight passed it Cobb mid-tackle and he wriggled his way through. Hamm slotted home the conversion to make it 15-41.

Oakham got a consolation try right at the very end after their scrum half took a penalty quickly on the five metre line, passed to the fly half who played a short pass to the number seven and he found a gap in the Luton line and touched down to make 20-41.

Luton will be looking for another win next weekend as they take on Old Laurentians at Newlands Road.
