The game kicked off at a frantic pace with both sides looking to get into the ascendancy. Luton had the better of the opening 10 but couldn't find a way through as Swifts defended their line superbly. Swifts used their big runners in the backs regularly and managed to break a number of tackles on the 15 minute mark to score in the corner, with their fly half adding the kick from out wide. Luton then suffered a massive blow when centre Mark Davey went off injured to a broken ankle. The reshuffle saw flanker Harry Jeffries go into the centre. For the rest of the half Swifts dominated possession but couldn't break through a resolute Luton defence which kept them at bay several times. Luton's only respite came through clearing their lines and making Swifts build from their own 22. On the brink of halftime the tough encounter spilled over into a bit of handbags from both sides. Somehow Swifts remained with 15 men on the field but Luton saw Ryan Duffy and Alex Clack sin binned just before the break.
Against the odds Luton started the 2nd half much brighter and pulled level despite being two men down. Dean Ashton's kick was chased by Paul Reed who hacked on for Chris Mayhew to pick up. The Full Back cut through the Swifts back 3 and under the posts. Ashton added the extras to make it 7-7. Once back to 15 men Luton began to try and turn the screw and excellent scrummaging from the forwards put Swifts on the back foot and nullified their big backs who no longer had go forward ball to run onto. Increasingly Swifts gave away penalties and Harry Vilder's quick thinking at a tap penalty saw him score in the corner to make it 12-7 with 15 minutes left. Both sides knew the game was not over and both sides pressed on for a score. Ashton tried to make the gap beyond a converted try but his drop goal attempt went well wide. The last 10 saw Swifts bombard the Luton 22 but again strong tackling and tactical kicking saw Swifts fail to capitalise. They came close with the last play of the game but Luton would not let them pass and turned the ball over to win a captivating and physical contest 12-7
