Luton 2s lifted the Hertfordshire and Middlesex Merit 3 League Cup on Saturday, after an emphatic victory over league champions Hatfield in a game which ended 28-3.
It was an all forward affair as Luton’s pack physicality dominated a Hatfield side who were slow to get going after the first whistle.
A clinical Luton lineout five meters out from Hatfield’s Try line followed by a big shove, lead to an early Wayne Hemson try, as he led his pack with a marching maul over their goal line.
Fly Half Olly Haynes slotted the ball over the bar for the conversion.
Pressure doubled on Hatfield after Hemson followed his earlier try with another 5 points.
Haynes again didn’t look like he’d miss, after he struck the ball sweetly between the sticks, and sealed yet another 2 points for the team.
Number 8 Matt McClurg came close to scoring after stepping past two players down the wing, no mean feat, only to be halted by the opposing fullback.
A high tackle from Luton gave Hatfield three easy points before the break, but even so, it looked like the boys from Bedfordshire already had one hand on the trophy - as the score stood at 17-3.
It was a quiet second half, however McClurg’s hard work finally paid off after scoring deep into the game as it looked like Hatfield had little answer for Luton’s dominance.
An interception and late break from a Hatfield winger was the closest their team got to scoring a try all game but was brought down five meters out by winger Alex Hill.
A final penalty kick from Haynes sealed the cup for Luton and the celebrations started, a dejected Hatfield pondered where it all went wrong.
Prop Charlie Wallington’s heroic effort during scrummaging was enough for the young Luton player to have been awarded ‘Man of the Match.’
It was the result fellow Prop Paul Thomas would have wanted, who bows out of the team after 22 years at the club.
Having come third in the league, cup victory was the boost Luton 2s needed ahead of next season - where promotion is on the cards.
Talking about promotion, eyes now turn to the Luton 1s who lock horns with Matlock on Saturday at Newlands in the play-off.
