Unexpected fixture for Luton Under 7s

This week, Luton Under 7s had the unexpected pleasure of a "trip" to our nearest neighbours, Stockwood Park. Stockwood were let down at short notice, so approached us to see if we could step into the breach, something that we were pleased to do. Given the short notice, and the onset of half term, I was delighted to be able to help out and that we had so many players available.

We had 15 players, so for the first time this season were able to split into three squads: Red, Green and White. Stockwood Under 8s had no opposition (our own Under 8s took the option to train at home), so we picked out our oldest players for the Red Team and they played 4 games against Stockwood Under 8s. Our two remaining squads played three games each. Overall, then, we played 10 matches, won 6, drew 3 and lost just 1. How bad? More pleasing was that more and more of our players are scoring tries: no less than 13 out of 15 this week. Tantalisingly close to 100%.

Scores and scorers were as follows:

Luton Red 10 v 10 Stockwood Park Under 8s
Tries: Callum (5), Ollie (3), Darcy, Archie
Luton Red 8 v 4 Stockwood Park Under 8s
Tries: Callum (4), Edward, Archie (3)
Luton Red 11 v 10 Stockwood Park Under 8s
Tries: Callum (2), Edward, Ollie (4), Darcy (2), Archie (2)
Luton Red 10 v 6 Stockwood Park Under 8s
Tries: Callum (5), Ollie (4), Darcy

Luton Green 5 v 5 Stockwood Park
Tries: Poppy (3), Colby (2)
Luton Green 6 v 4 Stockwood Park
Tries: Jayden, Josh A (2), Colby (3)
Luton Green 6 v 4 Stockwood Park
Tries: Poppy, Jayden, Colby (4)

Luton White 5 v 5 Stockwood Park
Tries: Jake (2), Liam (2), Joseph
Luton White 6 v 3 Stockwood Park
Tries: Jake, Tyler (3), Joseph (2)
Luton White 2 v 4 Stockwood Park
Tries: Jake, Joseph

With three squads and just two Man of the Match Awards to hand out, picking our MOTM winners was even more agonizing than usual this week. The performance of the Red Team was outstanding; to take on a team a year older than themselves and to go undefeated was brilliant. All five players scored tries, notable Edward's first ever tries and Darcy opening her account this season, Ollie with his amazing tagging, and an honourable mention to Archie. However, the winner was Callum. He top-scored with 16 tries, but what won it for him was his great defence. If the opposition is under pressure, they will make mistakes and they will not score. It is half the battle.

So, we had one prize for the Green and White teams. The White team did nothing wrong, and in particular kudos to Tyler who scored his first ever tries. In the Green Team, Poppy, Jayden and Josh A all scored their first tries of the season (Josh A on his debut!) but the outstanding player was Colby. His support play was absolutely spot on: he made it look all so easy. Well done Callum and Colby.

We are away to Leighton Buzzard next Sunday. More information to follow.
